Our verdict

Tailscale remains the safer default for most businesses because of its polish, documentation and track record. Choose NetBird when open source or self-hosting is a requirement, or when its free tier and euro pricing fit better. Both are big upgrades over a legacy VPN.

NetBird and Tailscale both build peer-to-peer WireGuard networks so devices can reach each other securely without a traditional VPN concentrator. Tailscale is the more established product, with a polished experience and large user base. NetBird is fully open source, including the control plane, which makes it attractive to teams that want to self-host or avoid vendor lock-in.

Choose NetBird if…

  • You want to self-host the entire control plane
  • Open-source licensing is a requirement
  • You are an EU organisation wanting EU-based control
  • You want a generous free tier for a small team

Choose Tailscale if…

  • You want the most polished, proven product
  • Ease of setup for non-specialists matters most
  • You rely on features such as MagicDNS, SSH and app connectors
  • You want a larger community and ecosystem

Open source and self-hosting

NetBird's client and management service are open source and can be self-hosted. Tailscale's clients are largely open source but the coordination server is proprietary; the community Headscale project offers a self-hosted alternative that Tailscale doesn't support commercially.

Access control

Both support identity-based access policies, groups and SSO. Tailscale's ACL system and grants are mature and well documented. NetBird offers group-based policies and posture checks such as OS version and geolocation.

Ease of use

Tailscale is widely regarded as one of the easiest networking tools to deploy. NetBird is straightforward too, but its admin experience and documentation are younger.

Pricing

NetBird is free for up to five users, then about €6 per user per month on Team and €12 on Business. Tailscale is free for personal use, with business plans from around $6 to $18 per user per month.

Maturity

Tailscale has a larger customer base, more integrations and a longer track record. NetBird is evolving quickly but is a smaller company.

Switching between NetBird and Tailscale

Migration difficulty: Moderate

Both are agent-based, so switching means installing a new client on every device and recreating access policies.

  1. Document current groups, ACLs and subnet routes.
  2. Set up the new network and recreate groups and policies.
  3. Roll out the new client to a pilot group alongside the old one.
  4. Move subnet routers and exit nodes, then the remaining devices.
  5. Remove the old client and revoke its keys.
