Our verdict

ChatGPT is the better single assistant for most teams because it covers more jobs. Perplexity is the better research tool; give it to people whose work depends on finding and citing current information.

Perplexity is an answer engine: it searches the web, reads sources and replies with citations, which makes it excellent for research and fact-finding. ChatGPT is a general-purpose assistant that can also search the web but shines at drafting, analysis, coding and creative work. For many teams the question is not which one, but which one to pay for first.

Choose ChatGPT if…

  • You need one assistant for writing, analysis, coding and research
  • You want custom GPTs and file analysis
  • Your team creates more than it researches
  • You want team workspaces with admin controls

Choose Perplexity if…

  • Research with visible sources is your primary use case
  • You need quick, cited answers about current events or markets
  • You want to choose between several AI models in one place
  • Analysts, marketers or founders do lots of desk research

Sources and citations

Pricing

Perplexity Pro is around $20 per month and Enterprise Pro around $40 per user per month. ChatGPT Plus is around $20 per month and Business around $25–30 per user per month.

Switching between ChatGPT and Perplexity

Migration difficulty: Easy

There is little to migrate between assistants. Most teams pilot both and decide by role.

  1. Write down your team's ten most common AI tasks.
  2. Run each task in both tools and score usefulness and accuracy.
  3. License by role: researchers on Perplexity, creators on ChatGPT, or one tool for all.
  4. Set a policy for verifying cited facts.
  5. Review usage after 60 days and drop unused seats.
